woman smiling happy Do you want a Hollywood smile? With the advancements in dentistry, it can be difficult to choose which way you’re going to achieve the smile of your dreams. In the past, the question was how?

If you’re wondering about how cosmetic dentistry can give you a swift, shiny straight smile, porcelain veneers may be right for you. In fact, we’re here to help you understand how far dentistry has come in order to help you achieve your goals.

What Are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers work to combine the many solutions that cosmetic dentistry can provide all into one procedure. Veneers are customized thin shells of high-grade dental materials that work to mask your flaws. They are simply crafted just for you and permanently placed on the front surfaces of your teeth.

Receiving your veneers is a relatively non-invasive procedure, making them more popular than many other cosmetic options. After shaving a minuscule amount of tooth enamel, your dentist will bond them to your teeth. Before you know it, you’ll have a brand-new smile to show off.

The History of Porcelain Veneers

The ways to achieve a great smile weren’t always so simple. In fact, it hasn’t been as accessible since recent years, even though cosmetic dentistry has been around since the 1920’s!

The 1920’s

In the late 1920’s, Dr. Charles Pincus (a famous dentist from California) defined “the famous smile.” The majority of his patients were famous celebrities that wanted the perfect teeth to show off. He would attach an acrylic material to the front of teeth with a special adhesive for patients that wanted to appear on the movie screen with a straight, bright smile.

The 1930’s and 1940’s

Although progression was slower during these two decades, there was a lot of buzz about veneers in Hollywood. There was also the spark of interest from not just celebrities, but everyday patients that wanted to achieve a better smile.

With advancements made, veneers were being crafted from porcelain, but the bonding agent needed to be improved. Then came the 50’s…

The 1950’s -1980’s

Finally, after lots of trial and error, a dentist by the name of Dr. Michael Bunocore discovered that the bonding would solidify for a longer period if you etched the tooth. This practice was then applied for sealants, restorations, and cosmetic veneers.

Over the course of a few decades, J.R. Calamia and R. J. Simonsen combined studies to discover a way to make the bonding surface strong enough for permanent attachments of porcelain veneers.

Nowadays, porcelain veneers are so advanced that it’s nearly impossible to tell that they aren’t your natural teeth. Plus, they are permanently bonded thanks to dentistry’s developments, providing a long-lasting gorgeous smile for patients.
